The Community Ownership Journey of The Crown
The Crown closed its doors on 21st January 2026, marking a sad day for the community.
Despite repeated efforts over the years attempting to persuade Fullers to sell the pub, it was not until mid-February that an agreement was reached, paving the way for the next steps in the process.
On 27th February, the Bernard Hall hosted a memorable village meeting. During this gathering, the vision for Community Ownership of The Crown was presented, alongside the necessary steps required to take ownership, undertake essential renovations, and eventually reopen the pub.
To realise this ambitious plan, comprehensive support from the community was required, as well as a significant fundraising effort. The target was set at £619,000—an amount needed to cover the freehold, fixtures and fittings, stamp duty, VAT, legal costs, restocking, and the refurbishment work to meet new standards.
To date, over 200 pledges have been received, amounting to over £650,000. This means we have achieved our goal in just 6 weeks which is a truly remarkable accomplishment. It is amazing to have such a large network of people ready to help Abi and her team drive The Crown forward.
Legal proceedings are underway, the Community Benefit Society has been established, and advanced assurance for tax relief has been submitted to HMRC.
The management committee has been appointed and is working diligently behind the scenes to ensure that everything is organised and ready for the next phase.
There were hopes to reopen The Crown on the first bank holiday weekend in May. However, due to numerous factors beyond our control, it has been decided that we cannot commit to this date. We are currently working on the launch plans to deliver the quickest outcome for the opening; however we cannot issue the precise dates yet.
Additional information can be found on our website, villagebluesky.com and social media. Updates on progress will continue to be shared through these channels—please stay tuned for further developments.
We have just shared a questionnaire with you to find out more about what you want from your community pub. The Crown needs to be the place we all want to go, and we want your thoughts and ideas to shape The Crown’s future. Please take a look at it using the QR above.
